Benefit Resources for Retired Building Trades Members

This page summarizes the main benefit programs available to retired union members in the building trades. Eligibility requirements vary by local, fund, and work history — contact your local union or fund administrator for guidance specific to your situation.

Pension

Most building trades locals participate in multi-employer defined-benefit pension funds negotiated through the collective bargaining process. Common fund administrators include:

  • Central Pension Fund (CPF) — covers many IUOE, Boilermakers, and related locals
  • National Pension Fund (NPF) — covers many Sheet Metal locals
  • UA Local Union Pension Funds — administered per district

Contact your local union hall for the name and contact information of your pension fund.

Health Coverage

Retiree health coverage varies widely by local and fund. Some options available to building trades retirees include:

  • COBRA continuation from active coverage
  • Taft-Hartley retiree health plans administered by your local or district
  • Medicare (eligible at 65)
  • Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies

Asbestos Trust Funds

More than 60 asbestos bankruptcy trust funds were established to compensate workers harmed by asbestos-containing products. Many building trades workers qualify based on their trade and documented work history — without needing to identify a specific employer.

Compensation from asbestos trust funds is separate from workers’ compensation and does not require filing a lawsuit in most cases.

Major trusts relevant to building trades workers include:

  • Owens Corning / Fibreboard Trust
  • Armstrong World Industries Trust
  • W.R. Grace Trust
  • Combustion Engineering 524(g) Trust
  • Pittsburgh Corning Trust
  • Babcock & Wilcox Trust

Trust claims do not require a lawyer, though most claimants work with an attorney who handles asbestos cases.

Social Security Disability (SSDI)

Workers with an asbestos-related disease may qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance if they are under 65 and unable to work. The SSA maintains a “Compassionate Allowances” list that accelerates approval for mesothelioma and certain other conditions.
